January 2025 NAC, Day 4: Fencers Deliver Thrilling Performances as NAC Wraps Up

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The final day of the 2025 January NAC continued with impressive moments. Ellen Geddes PLY (Shepherd Swords Fencing Club & Orion Fencing) made her return to NAC’s in the new year and picked up a new weapon.
“It's great. I've never fenced saber before. I just picked it up now, and so it was great to come out and
win.” Geddes claimed gold in the parafencing women’s saber event. To prepare for this competition, her club held a huge international training camp where she “learned to fence saber against people who are really good at it.”
For Kasia Nixon (Peter Westbrook Foundation & Fencers Club Inc.), it was back to business as usual. She prepared like she has for every other tournament. Once she hit the finals strip though, it was leave it all out there.
“I had to leave everything on the strip. You know, it was the last bout, and so I had to give it my all. And that's what I was trying to do. I was trying to stay focused, not even think about the end of the bout. I had to just think about one touch.”
Chris O'Loughlin (New York Athletic Club) ended the day with a gold medal and reflecting on why he continues to come back as a veteran fencer.
He has two main reasons: “Two things, one is I love to compete, and the other one is the people, the people third, I just love coming to max. I've been coming to these since I was, like, 15 years old, whatever. And it's like, kind of like home for me.”
