COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Don’t sit around and wonder about the inner workings of USA Fencing. Immerse yourself in this fascinating world and put yourself in a great position for future engagement with our sport.
USA Fencing is proud to announce that we’re accepting applications for the 2024-25 cohort of the USA Fencing Leadership Academy.
Applications are open now through June 12.
Launched in 2021, the Leadership Academy has swiftly become a cornerstone for cultivating leadership within the fencing community. The 10-month program offers a comprehensive exploration of the sport’s governance, management and operational frameworks. Members from all facets of our community — volunteers, athletes, coaches, referees and more — have joined to deepen their understanding and engagement with the sport.
A Closer Look at the Leadership Academy’s Curriculum
The Leadership Academy’s curriculum is designed to provide a panoramic view of the inner workings of USA Fencing’s governance and operations. You’ll also gain insights into broader sports management practices. Here’s a quick overview of what’s in store in the 2024-25 session:
September 2024: Participants kick off with a historical overview of fencing in the U.S., studying key documents like the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws, and getting a day-to-day glimpse into the operations at USA Fencing.
October 2024: The focus shifts to the structural setup of USA Fencing, detailing the roles of the National Office and Board of Directors, and examining our relationships with organizations like the FIE and the USOPC.
November 2024: The art and responsibilities of refereeing take center stage, with insights from past and present FIE Rules and Arbitrage members.
December 2024: Financial stewardship is discussed, with contributions from the CFO, Treasurer, and the Development Director, alongside a primer on Roberts Rules of Order.
January through May 2025: These months cover a range of topics including international programs, event organization, ethics, youth development, and membership services. Each month is dedicated to specific areas integral to the successful operation and growth of fencing both domestically and internationally.
June 2025: The program concludes with a deep dive into committee participation and leadership opportunities within USA Fencing, preparing participants to take active roles in the governance of the sport.
July 2025: The 2024-25 Cohort participates in a graduation ceremony and celebration at the 2025 Summer Nationals in Milwaukee.
Why Get Involved
Phil Andrews, CEO of USA Fencing, emphasizes the importance of the Leadership Academy, noting that several of its graduates have gone on to major leadership roles in fencing and in their day jobs.
