Paris 2024 Medalists Kiefer, Scruggs Return to Action in Women's Foil Team Event

PARIS, France — Just four days after earning an unprecedented two individual Olympic medals, the U.S. Women’s Foil team is back in action at the sold-out Grand Palais. 

Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.) and Paris 2024 silver medalist Lauren Scruggs (Queens, N.Y.) return to the strip alongside Team USA squadmates Jackie Dubrovich (Maplewood, N.J.) and Maia Weintraub (Philadelphia, Pa.)

This same quartet is coming fresh off a gold medal at the 2024 Zonal Championships in June in Lima, Peru. 

During the 2023-24 FIE (International Fencing Federation) season, the Women’s Foil team earned three World Cup medals: two gold and one bronze.

  • Tbilisi World Cup (April 2024): Bronze
  • Cairo World Cup (February 2024): Gold
  • Novi Sad World Cup (December 2023): Gold

On the strength of that season, the United States enters the eight-team tournament as the second seed, with a matchup against No. 7 China awaiting in the first round. 

The United States has one medal in this event, which was first contested in 1960. That was a silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, won by Emily Cross, Erinn Smart and Hanna Thompson
