July 30 Olympics Preview: Women’s Epee Team
by Bryan Wendell
PARIS, France — After an exciting flurry of individual events that saw Team USA win three foil medals (gold for Lee Kiefer, silver for Lauren Scruggs and bronze for Nick Itkin), focus now shifts to the thrilling team events.
First up: Women’s Epee, where Team USA’s talented quartet of Anne Cebula (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Hadley Husisian (Oakton, Va.), Margherita Guzzi Vincenti (Hartland, Wis.) and Kat Holmes (Washington, D.C.) will look to give Team USA its second medal in the event. (The other came in 2012, a bronze.)
The United States enters the eight-team tournament as the sixth seed, with a matchup against No. 3 Poland awaiting in the first round.
Fast Facts #
- The Women’s Epee Team Event has a relatively short history in the Games. This is only the seventh time the event has been contested in the Olympics. It was first contested in Atlanta in 1996 and not contested in 2008 because the IOC opted to rotate certain team events off the Olympic program.
- Team USA has won one medal in this event: a bronze in 2012 (Courtney Hurley, Kelley Hurley, Maya Lawrence and Susie Scanlan)
When and How to Watch #
All bouts are streamed live on Peacock and NBCOlympics.com (streaming schedule), with bronze and gold medal bouts expected to air on the E! network.
