2022 NCAA Championship Participants Announced

The NCAA has announced the 144 student-athletes who will compete at the 2022 NCAA Championships on March 24th- March 27th. This year’s championships will be held at Castellan Family Fencing Facility on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
Thursday, March 24

Women’s Semifinals and Finals
Saturday, March 26
Men’s Pool Rounds 1-3
Sunday, March 27
Men’s Pool Rounds 4-5
Men’s Semifinals and Finals
Each athlete will fence 23 individual five-touch bouts over the course of a grueling two days with the top four athletes advancing to the semifinals which features a 15-touch direct elimination bracket.
Men’s Foil
Nick Itkin (Notre Dame) makes his return to the NCAA Championships after competing at last summer’s Tokyo Olympics. With 2 individual NCAA Championships and an Olympic Team Bronze Medal, all eyes will be on the Notre Dame senior. This year’s field is one of the strongest fields in men’s foil and will include 2021 Olympians Mohamed Hamza (Princeton), Diego Cervantes (Ohio State), Blake Broszus (Penn).
Women’s Foil
The last time Sylvie Binder (Columbia-Barnard College) competed at the NCAA Championships she won the individual title. Lauren Scruggs (Harvard) already has a handful of World Championship titles on her resume, she will look to add an NCAA title next. Scruggs will be joined by two of her World Championship teammates in Zander Rhodes (Columbia-Barnard College) and Maia Weintraub (Princeton).
Men’s Sabre
A brotherly rivalry highlights the men’s sabre field. Brothers Ahmed and Fares Ferjani (St. Johns) both look to bring home the title back to St. Johns for the first time since 2011. They will have to go through defending champion Luke Linder (Notre Dame). Linder will be joined by 2020 Junior World Championship teammates, Kamar Skeete (Penn State), Christopher Walker (Columbia-Barnard Colllege), and Mitchell Saron (Harvard).
Women’s Sabre
Last season Kara Linder (Notre Dame) won her first individual title. However, this year Maia Chamberlain (Princeton) makes her return to the championships and will look to defend her 2018 title. Elizabeth Tartakovsky (Harvard) is fresh off a bronze team medal at Athens World Cup and will look to build off this momentum with an NCAA Championship. 2016 Olympian Julieta Toledo (Ohio State) will be making her first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Men’s Epee
Ryan Griffiths (Penn State) will be looking to defend his title in men’s epee. He will be up against former 1st Team All-Americans Stephen Ewart (Notre Dame) and Teddy Lombardo (Columbia-Barnard College.) Slava Zingerman won 3 individual NCAA Championships for Wayne State from 2007-2009 and returns as a coach this year with hopes of leading 1st Team All-American Ahmed Elsayed (Wayne State) to his first NCAA Championship.
Women’s Epee
Last year Laura Fekete (Long Island) made history of the first athlete in program history to win a NCAA Individual Championship. This year she hopes to make it two in a row and will be up against Tokyo Olympian Kaylin Hsieh (Notre Dame). Greta Candreva (Harvard), Emily Vermeule (Harvard), and Lola Constantino (Princeton), all 2019 Junior World Championship team members, will all be making their first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Team
Notre Dame will be looking for their 2nd straight and their 4th in 6 years. The last time Columbia-Barnard College competed at the NCAA Championships they walked away with the 2019 title. Princeton qualified 12 athletes, including six freshman. Ohio State also qualified 12 and will be looking to bring the title back to Columbus for the first time since 2012. Harvard and Penn State both missed out on qualifying the maximum but with 11 and 10 athletes respectively, both are within reach of the 2021 NCAA Championship.
