Let’s look back on last season’s remarkable progress and ongoing efforts to welcome every fencer into our community.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The results are in, and it’s great news for anyone who cares about bringing fencing to more young people.

USA Fencing’s 2023-24 Impact Report, which you can read here, heralds a season of significant strides in introducing fencing to more people from diverse backgrounds, while acknowledging there is still work to be done.

From a steady rise in overall membership to new initiatives focused on mentoring underrepresented coaches and supporting aspiring athletes, the latest report paints a bright picture of growth and inclusivity in our sport — even as the path toward progress grows more challenging.

“This past season, we witnessed fencing become more accessible for communities that have historically encountered barriers,” says Dr. Shannon Jolly, USA Fencing’s Senior Manager of Outreach & Impact. “We’ve seen an uptick in membership from individuals whose voices have not always been heard, and that’s just the beginning of what’s possible.”

The report’s highlights include:

  • Expanded Representation: Year-over-year data show an upward trend in membership, with more women, and more non-binary athletes, trying fencing through local clubs and developmental programs.
  • Innovative Programs: Efforts like the Project Empower Mentoring Program (supporting women and non-binary coaches) and Fencing the Gap (providing individual scholarships and mini-grants) are lowering barriers to entry.
  • Community Partnerships: Through alliances with organizations like All Kids Play and Angel City Sports, more youth, including those with disabilities, are discovering a sense of belonging on the strip.

USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews is both excited by the steps taken and realistic about what lies ahead.

“We’re proud of how far we’ve come in fostering a culture of opportunity,” he says. “Yet we recognize that ongoing social and economic challenges still limit who can access our sport. Our commitment is to keep innovating, forging new partnerships and ensuring all fencers feel welcomed.”

With initiatives like the GRACE Program — which waives tournament and event fees for athletes in need — and the continued growth of local outreach, USA Fencing stands poised to meet the challenges ahead and bring the thrill of fencing to all.
