Charlotte, N.C. - The 2025 Junior Olympics & Division I NAC continued on the third day of competition. Four more national champions were crowned across the junior and cadet events.
One of the national champions crowned today was Nathaniel Wimmer (Elite Fencing Academy - VA & Elite Fencing Academy - GA), who drove with his Mom, six hours to get to the Junior Olympics. Earning this medal he said “words cannot describe the joy I feel. The moment when I realized I won and I looked at the score was insane. It's indescribable.”
He also talked about how much of a mental game fencing is, “The struggle with fencing is mental. So in those tense situations, you have to take as much time as possible to compose yourself. So for example, after a touch, regardless if I score or if I get scored on, I take a very long walk back to the guard line. I have a little routine with my bell guard that I do to help calm me down.”
Katerina Lung (Moe Fencing Club LLC), earned the Division I Women’s Foil gold medal after a lot of tough bouts. “I feel like every single bout I fence today was actually, like, pretty intensive. Like, there were like, a lot of like, really close bouts I fenced today,” she said.
“I like to think about how it feels to win. And obviously, everyone wants to win. I like to think about how happy I feel after each touch. And it's like, touch after touch, I get a point, and I'm like, ‘Ooh, let's go’. And then I get motivated. Also I like caffeine as well!”
Brynnley McKee (Tim Morehouse Fencing Club), claimed a second national title in two days. Two straight days of fencing at the junior olympics only means lots of recovery and rest whenever you can. That’s exactly what Brynnley did, “Last night, I stayed late and stretched until like 10:30p.m. So honestly, when I walked in today, I was pretty tired, but I knew I wanted to win, so I think I had a lot more energy and a lot more excitement winning for the second time, just knowing that I was bringing home two golds.”
She continued talking about the support she felt over the past two days, “I had such an incredible support system. Even just looking back at the people on my side of the stand was so refreshing, and I know that they're in it with me, and it feels so, so great. So I just felt really, really supported today.”
