April 2025 NAC, Day 2: Legacies Secured Among National Championship Events
by Nicole Kirk & Rachel Luce
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The second day of the 2025 Division I National Championship, Parafencing National Championship, and April North American Cup was monumental as the legacy of Peter Westbrook was honored and cemented forever as the Division I Men’s Saber event is now the Peter Westbrook Division I Men’s Saber National Championship.
Susan Miles Westbrook and Peter’s family came today in honor of the naming of the event.
“Wow, it's such an honor, really, such an honor.” She says Peter lived and dreamed and breathed fencing. It was an honor for me to learn about fencing. I actually learned about him in 1984 when he won the bronze metal here in Los Angeles, 40 years ago. And so to come full circle and full fencing to honor him, I'm so blessed. I'm so happy. My job in life is to keep the legacy of Peter Westbrook.
Pat Bedrosian (Salle Couturier) battled back after having to leave her Malibu home twice during the Los Angeles fires earlier this year. Because of this, her tournament preparation was barely there. Before today's matches, she went with the flow and gave her best effort.
”Well, I can't say that I did much. I live in Malibu, and I was evacuated twice in the last two months, and my fencing here wound up, who knows where, and I just didn't have any chance to practice at all.“
Shelby Mitchell (Valkyrie Fencing) won her first gold medal, which happens to also be a national championship, after a tragic loss in her family whom she dedicated the win to.
“I’ve been working my butt off for this,” she said. After taking a hiatus, she said she really relied on her breathing to get her through the day.
“I really like breathing. So if you saw me in the final, you saw me like [taking a deep breath], you saw me breathing.
