PARIS, France - Team USA came out in full force on the final individual competition day with two direct elimination wins.
Jataya Taylor and Garrett Schoonover dominated in their Round of 32 matchups. Taylor defeated Oliveira of Brazil with a ten point margin over her opponent.
Schoonover also came out fighting to defeat his opponent 15-7. With these wins, both Taylor and Schoonover moved into the Round of 16. Ultimately both Taylor and Schoonover fell in the Round of 16 to move into the rounds of repechage.
Schoonover ultimately fell in his first round of repechage but he reflected on the support his family has given him.
“My little entourage up there, they've been great. You know, it's been super nice to come out every morning and I can pick them out of the crowd so I can see them. I can make eye contact with them. And the last couple of days have been a little frustrating, a little disappointing with the losses. So to be able to reward them by putting on a show, they spent the money to come out here to support me and to at least put on a better show today for them, they all have been very understanding,” said Schoonover.
Ellen Geddes also made her way to the rounds of repechage as she faced a familiar opponent in Santos of Brazil. In a stressful first round of repechage, Geddes took the lead but it quickly got to a tie, where the final point was anyone’s game.
“We obviously, like very much, tried the same thing at 14-14, and had a double so it didn't count. And then we both very much had the same idea again and went back. But Monica and I have fenced each other so many times now at this point, but fortunately, I just had a little bit of a better setup than she did, so it worked out,” said Geddes.
Geddes moved on to the second round of repechage to face Fedota-Isaieva (UKR), where she ultimately fell to her opponent.
