LOUISVILLE, KY. - The final day of the 2024 November North American Cup (NAC) finished out with lots of excitement.

Junior Women’s Saber gold medalist, Sophie Liu (Capital Fencing Academy) said she felt an “overwhelming amount of support” during her victory. This gold medal for her makes her even more excited for what is to come in the future.

She said she had results based goals but “in terms of myself, definitely, take it one competition at a time. Just enjoy the process. It’s really easy to get caught up in points and stuff, but I just want to have a good time.”

Roy Graham (Jovanovic Fencing) proved just how much of a marathon a day of fencing really is after claiming gold in the junior men’s foil event. He came out of pools ranked 97th and ended up at the top of the podium. “It feels absolutely amazing. It’s been awhile since I have won an event, I came into today with a lot of pressure. It was a battle.”

Thinking back on his day he said “just take it one bout at a time. I don’t care about my seeding, once I get into direct elimination, I felt like I had nothing to lose then. I really felt like with that mentality I was able to push through.

In one of the final events of the day, Leehi Machulsky (Academy of Fencing Masters & Princeton University), claimed gold in junior women’s epee. She said “it’s definitely rewarding” when reflecting on her win.

Her secret to success was just keeping calm, “I just tried to keep calm, I was listening to music, tried to stay focused, listen to my coach, and my mom was there to support me so I think the help of everyone around me was really helpful.”
