November NAC: Day 2 Recap
by Nicole Kirk
LOUISVILLE, KY. - The second day of the 2024 November North American Cup, saw six more medalists awarded gold. What was the secret to success? It was all in the preparation.
The Cadet Men’s Saber Team event gold medalists, team One of Won (Christopher Guffey, Chris Hu, Eric Kwalwasser, and Jeffrey Tao) said, “so we kind of switched it up a bit. Usually we would just wake up like, you know, shower, get breakfast and come but today, we just decided to hit up some team bonding before this event. So we caught an Uber and we went to Bass Pro Shop outdoor world, and also Buffalo Wild Wings. And it was a grand adventure. We really reconnected with nature before our event, and I think that is really the difference that brought victory.”
The team credits this bonding moment to getting to the top of the podium. They continued saying “I think the team bonding was really important because, you know, it's really important to have fun out there, and I think that's what we accomplished.”
Y-14 Men’s Epee gold medal winner Simon Shan (Dynamo Fencing), said his gold medal meant “I've worked hard since the last competition. I've trained, I've put in work and also performed well.”
To prepare for a tournament like the November NAC, Shan said the most important thing to him was making sure his body felt okay.
“So, like this month was pretty close to the last tournament, the October NAC, so I don't really have much time, but going home, making sure my body feels alright. That's important, making sure my body feels alright. And going to training every day, still having lessons, stuff like that.”
