November NAC: Day 1 Recap
by Nicole Kirk
LOUISVILLE, KY. - The first day of the November North American Cup kicked off with six gold medals being awarded; two team medals and four individual medals.
Fencers left everything they had on the strip, “it's mostly mental endurance,” said Daniel Holz (Premier Fencing Academy), the gold medalist of Junior Men’s Saber.
“Keep fighting, keep pushing, keep going, even when your body wants you to quit, your mind is number one,” he said. When he was able to keep his focus and take it one touch at a time, he made it to the top of the podium.
Of course though, it’s always easier to get to the top of the podium when you have the support of family and friends.
“My brothers, my brothers have been there since day one, literally. And then my coaches, of course, and my parents, just everyone who supported me, and also my teammates that are just chewing from the sidelines, every ounce of yelling, every ounce of cheering, every ounce of clapping, it helps.”
The Cadet Women’s Saber Team of Callie Wang, Amari Pantaleon-Mazola and Leah Hsu from Nellya Fencers, took home gold after a long day of fencing. Their secret to success “We just kind of talked to each other and made sure we were all like, stayed in the game and didn't get unfocused.”
Emily Jing (Jovanovic Fencing), took home gold in Junior Women’s Foil. She talked about how she came to the tournament with the mindset of “this is just practice” but using that mindset helped take the pressure off the tournament and propel her to the top of the podium.
“I feel like recently I've been under a lot of pressure. So today I just really came here looking for practice, and like practicing the things that I'm learning,” Jing said. She continued “as the day went on, I got, like, more into it.”
