December SJCC & Para NAC: Day 3 Recap
by Nicole Kirk
ATLANTA, GA. - The final day of the December SJCC & Para NAC wrapped up with more gold medals, and lots of smiles.
Heartlyn Tabangay (Midwest Fencing Club) claimed gold in cadet women’s saber on the final day of competition, and had also competed prior in the weekend. Her first day of competition didn’t work out the way she was hoping, so she set out for a redemption tour on the final day.
“Well, what was really running through my mind was why I was here, and it's kind of a rare occasion for my dad to take me to a tournament, because it's not all the time. So yeah, you know, even if I lose, I'm still gonna have people that are gonna love me. So I was like, Okay, I'm really into parry five. Like, I love parry five. So I just, I just went for it. I was like, okay, you know what? Just have some confidence. You don't have really, you don't really have anything to lose. Yeah. So, yeah, I was happy.”
Martin Nguyen (LA International Fencing) claimed his first national medal on the final day of competition in the junior men’s foil event.
“It feels really good. I have never won a national event before. Yesterday I didn’t do so good, so I’m really happy."
After a tough day yesterday, Ngyuen said “I had to reset my mindset. I was pretty tired yesterday.” The reset worked wonders for Ngyuen, and now he plans on celebrating his gold medal with a nice family dinner.
Catherine Witter (Elite Fencing Academy VA) had a tough final as she faced a familiar opponent. She said “It was a little harder. I mean, I knew what she did, which is good, but, like, there's definitely some history there.”
In a comeback victory, Witter said “in the final, I was down for a lot, and luckily she got, like, a couple red cards, and it kind of saved me. And then, like, I fenced her a lot before. I've known her since I was young, and so I just, I started going back. I started doing, like, attack on prep. I paid attention to what her best action was, and was trying to avoid that one.”
