December SJCC & Para NAC: Day 2 Recap
by Nicole Kirk
ATLANTA, GA. - Day two of the December SJCC & Parafencing NAC brought even more stand out moments. Fencers gave their all on the second day of competition.
Abe Kaplan (Greensboro Fencing Academy) captured a second gold medal across two days of competition, today in parafencing men’s foil. He faced the same competitor two days in a row, for two different weapons.
“I felt good about today. I was coming in ready. I was really wanting this one, foil is my main weapon.”
On switching from one weapon to another, he said “I gotta forget about epee, it’s in the past, it happened. I have had to focus on today and nothing else but today. Flip the switch.”
Aiden Tse (Premier Fencing Academy & Halberstadt Fencers' Club), took home gold and said “It feels really rewarding, because I haven't had that many national results, but this feels good.”
In an intense gold medal match, it came down to one touch, “It was intense. Because, it’s 14-14, but I just tried to stay calm and, relax and just focus one touch at a time.”
Leslie Irby (Nellya Fencers & Auburn Fencing Club) won a gold in parafencing women’s foil, and said she was feeling“ Numb, very, very numb. It just hasn't set in yet. Not yet. I'm still shaking.”
Through an afternoon of fencing, Irby had a few things going for her.
“Well, one listening to my coaches, and listening to my sidebar coaching/fencing friends, and just allowing you know the rhythm just to work. You know, fencing is a dance, so if I hear one motion do the next one, and just kind of put all of it together. It just kind of gelled at the very last moment. And it worked.”
