2023 Senior World Team: Meet the Six Squads Who Will Represent Team USA
by Bryan Wendell
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — After exciting action at the Plovdiv World Cup in Bulgaria and the Shanghai Grand Prix in China, the Women's Foil squad representing Team USA at the Pan-American Senior Championships and the FIE Fencing World Championships has been confirmed.
The team comprises a potent mix of established champions and rising stars: Lee Kiefer OLY, Jackie Dubrovich OLY, Lauren Scruggs and Maia Weintraub. These athletes have demonstrated their prowess at both domestic and international levels, solidifying their positions as some of the world's best fencers.
Kiefer, a member of the Bluegrass Fencers' Club, currently sits at the top of the FIE rankings and will compete at her 12th Senior Worlds. With an illustrious career filled with numerous medals at World Championships and a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Kiefer is a formidable force on the team.
Dubrovich of the New Jersey Fencing Alliance is currently ranked 17th in the FIE rankings and brings her wealth of experience to the squad — her fourth Senior World Team roster. Her impressive record includes multiple team silver medals at the Junior/Cadet World Championships and a team bronze at the 2019 Senior World Championships.
Scruggs, representing the Peter Westbrook Foundation and Harvard University, holds the 37th position in the current FIE rankings. A star on the rise, Scruggs boasts an impressive junior record, including multiple individual and team gold medals at the Junior/Cadet World Championships. This is her first Senior World Team.
Completing the squad is Weintraub from Fencers Club and Princeton University. Weintraub is currently ranked 27th in the FIE rankings and is on her second Senior World Team. Weintraub has proven her talent with a team silver at the 2022 Senior World Championships and team gold at the 2022 Junior/Cadet World Championships.
This quartet, along with the other five squads previously named, will make their debut at the 2023 Pan-American Senior Championships, taking place from June 14–21 in Lima, Peru, and subsequently represent the USA at the 2023 FIE Fencing World Championships scheduled for July 22–30 in Milan, Italy.
This promising lineup, bolstered by their stellar record and consistent performances, is set to face the best from around the globe as they seek to bring home medals and establish their places in the fencing world. Their experience and results at these competitions will be crucial in their quest for a spot on the 2024 Paris Olympic team.
