Fencing and HBCUs: A Winning Combination#

Our Vision: By 2028, we want to establish NCAA varsity fencing programs at multiple HBCUs, creating a national powerhouse of Black fencing excellence. Together, we can inspire the next generation of student-athletes, celebrate the rich culture of HBCUs, and expand access to one of the world’s most captivating sports.

  • Why Fencing?

It’s Fun: Fencing combines physical skill, strategy, and mental discipline. It’s often called "physical chess," making it exciting for athletes and spectators alike.

It’s Fast-Growing: Participation in fencing among Black youth has surged by 47% since 2019, creating a thriving community of young athletes seeking opportunities to excel.

It’s a Unique Fit: Fencing’s emphasis on excellence, discipline, and community aligns perfectly with the mission and values of HBCUs. It’s a sport where Black athletes are already breaking barriers and achieving success on the national and international stage.

It's Affordable: Adding fencing to your institution is a financially sound investment that may cost less than you think. USA Fencing will help your institution understand the financial realities of adding fencing and will assist with startup costs.

Competition: Fencers gain access to NCAA competition, Olympic (and Paralympic) pathways, and world-class leadership development opportunities.

Development: Fencing programs create future donors and ambassadors for the school through lifelong connections and shared pride.

  • Let’s Talk About “How”

Low Barrier to Entry: Fencing clubs and community programs are eager to collaborate.

Cultural Celebration: Fencing at HBCUs can celebrate and build on the rich traditions of Black excellence, creating unique events and experiences for students and alumni.

Success Stories in Black Fencing

Fencing legends such as Lauren Scruggs OLY, Ibtihaj Muhammad OLY and Peter Westbrook OLY have paved the way for future generations, showcasing the growth potential of Black excellence in the sport.

Most recently, at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, Lauren Scruggs became the first Black American woman fencer to win an individual Olympic medal.

I know from my own fencing career and from coaching champions in both life and in athletics that the sport offers a unique blend of athleticism and strategy, making it a perfect addition to HBCUs. With both of my parents being proud graduates of HBCUs, I’m especially committed to supporting the tradition of excellence these institutions uphold. It’s a sport that not only builds champions on the strip but also leaders in life.
